Yamaha Files Patent For An Electric Turbo Engine- A New Development In Turbocharging Smaller Engines? News24 –

Yamaha has been working on a slew of new innovations to ensure that their new lineup can provide the users with optimum performance with stable fuel efficiency. But the Hybrid system that we already saw being tested with the MT09 is possibly kept on hold, as Yamaha has filed a application for the patent of an electric Turbo on what appears to be one of its three cylinder engine which has a significantly better power output than that of the 119Hp in the Yzf-R9 and its naked sibling the MT-09

Yamaha Turbo Charged Engine Details

Unlike the other manufacturers who are using electric compressors with their engines, Yamha has been planning to use an electronically controlled Turbocharger. The E -Turbos are already in use in some high end cars and they basically help and minimize the turbo lag. These spin electronically and hence they spool up faster than a conventional Turbocharger. The patent images have revealed that Yamaha would not be using extensive battery packs and Hybrid system, – instead the photos have showcased that the turbocharger would be connected to a generator that is in turn connected to the crankshaft with a high voltage electric system that would allow the turbocharger to work as intended.

Yamaha has not revealed any details about such a technology yet. While Yamaha’s plans still seem to be in developing stages, Honda’s fascinating concept looks much more closer to production ready.

Two Motors in One – A Unique System (Yamaha’s Hybrid System)

Yamaha has announced a new Hybird system on their YouTube channel, the earlier version of the system has been developed around the 2023 MT-09. While the design does not reveal much, CGI diagrams have revealed that the electric motor would be mounted behind the engine roughly between the legs of the rider.  Yamaha has not revealed how the two motors would work together, whether they are geared together or whether gearbox has been specifically designed to ensure that both the motors work in harmony.

What further peaks our interest is the fact that the system retains its clutch lever and gear pedal- quite unlike the HYBRID models we have seen from other manufacturers such as Kawasaki.

Yamaha Hybrid Bike

The Video that has been released by Yamaha revealed that once the bike comes to halt it can be propelled up to the speeds of 35 mph in second gear using only electric power and beyond that the engine kicks in and helps the bike go faster.

Being plug in Hybrids the bike has been given a battery that has been mounted in the front of the rider, a close up shot of the tank has revealed. To keep the battery and the motor cools the bike has been equipped with a larger air intakes.  Beyond that to keep the powertrai in optimum conditions it has also been equipped with  additional radiators on both sides of the bike.

Manufacturers have not been too keen on testing out the possibility of a plug In HYBRID  bike but thanks to the added cost of the bike no PHEV motorcycles or scooters have made it into production.

No manufacturer, currently provides any such technology in India , Yamaha has equipped the FZ and Ray Z with mild Hybrid systems that aid the vehicle while in traffic. If the technology does well it’s possible that Yamaha might equip their other bikes with such a technology in India as well. Both the technology that Yamaha has been developing could revolutionize the way performance oriented vehicles approach sustainability and performance.
