Tata has been developing a slew of EV concepts over the years, with one of the most formidable among them being the Tata Altroz EV. The vehicle was first showcased at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, and was later previewed as a near-production-ready version at the Auto Expo 2020.
Done with concept previews, the brand now seems to have finalised the necessary changes. According to a report by Autocar Professional, it is now confirmed that the Altroz EV is still under development and has been codenamed Ascot by Tata Motors.
It was in 2021 that Tata was facing challenges in the development of the Altroz EV. Originally, the Altroz EV was supposed to be Tata’s next major launch after the Nexon EV. But at that time, Tata faced the challenge of packaging the battery pack under the floor without compromising the ground clearance of the hatchback.
While there were reports that the car would be launched this year, following the arrival of the Harrier EV and the Sierra EV, it now seems there will be a further delay.
Tata Altroz EV to Be Based on Punch EV Platform
The Punch facelift is due by this year’s festive season, along with a mid-life cycle revamp for the ICE model. The new Punch would probably get a revamped EV architecture which would help the manufacturer package a larger battery in the vehicle without compromising its stance. The battery pack would be an upgrade from the older Punch EV to ensure that the car can compete with the newer longer range offerings from competitors.
Tata Altroz EV is expected to be similar to Punch EV and based on the same Acti EV architecture. It seems that Tata has sorted out the problem by making necessary changes to the platform. Since the platform for both the vehicles would be the same, it’s possible that the new Altroz EV might also be offered with 25 kWh and 35 kWh battery units. The ARAI range of both the vehicles would be around 265 km and 365 km, respectively.
Since both vehicles offer similar value propositions, Tata would have to price them appropriately, otherwise they might end up sabotaging the sales figures of each other.
