After targeting the premium EV segment with the EV6 and EV9, Kia is now stepping up its focus on the mass-market EV segment in India. To that end, Kia has already launched the Carens Clavis EV. Next in the pipeline is the upcoming Syros EV, which has now been spied on test in India by an automotive enthusiast who spotted the EV version of the Syros while on its way to a charging station in Kochi.
No Exterior Changes
In terms of its exterior design and styling, the Kia Syros EV is largely the same as the ICE-powered Syros. The test mule was camouflaged at the front, rear, and up to the window line. Most of the visible parts, like the pillars, ORVMs, and roof rails, are the same as those seen on the ICE-powered Syros. A shark fin antenna was also visible.
The new Syros EV is expected to feature a slew of EV-specific features, such as a closed-off grille and a slot for the charging port. A test mule spotted earlier in South Korea was seen with the charging port placed on the left side. Beyond these changes, the vehicle appeared similar to the conventional Kia Syros.
Some minor changes could also be present in the detailing at the front and rear, though the side profile will largely be the same, with possible EV-specific badging. The test vehicle spotted in Korea was seen with the same alloy wheels as currently offered on the ICE Syros. The only differences that stood out were the green calipers and EV-specific badging.
Kia Syros EV – Performance, Battery, Range
Kia has not confirmed the specs yet, but it’s expected that the Syros EV may borrow battery packs from the Hyundai Inster EV. The latter utilizes a 42-kWh or a 49-kWh battery pack. These battery packs have nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry. The range is 370 km with the larger battery pack, and a 10% to 80% charge can be achieved in around 30 minutes. Similar specs are likely for the Syros EV.
The Kia Syros EV will primarily challenge rivals such as the Tata Punch EV and Windsor EV, while several variants could also compete with the likes of the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 400 EV, and the upcoming Fronx EV. The Syros EV could possibly be offered at a starting price of around Rs 14 lakh, with top variants reaching close to Rs 20 lakh.
