Yamuna Poisoned Or Politics Polluted? Delhi Elections Heat Up Amid Accusations Of Water Terrorism News24 –
Did the BJP government in Haryana deliberately increase the ammonia level of the water discharged to Delhi as an act of sabotage before the Delhi Assembly Elections? Leveling the serious charge, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has accused the saffron party of “water terrorism”.
In a letter written to the Election Commission, Atishi pointed out that the ammonia levels in the water coming from Haryana have steadily increased. She claimed that due to the mixing of untreated sewage or industrial waste from Haryana, the ammonia level in Yamuna has increased to 7 ppm in the last two days. It is a hike of 700% beyond the treatable limit.
Atishi Writes To Election Commission
The Delhi Chief Minister also said Delhi’s water treatment plants are unable to treat these levels of ammonia. As a result, Delhi has been forced to curtail water supply by 15 to 20%, affecting about 34 lakh people in Delhi, she wrote in the letter.
Calling it water terrorism, Atishi said that Haryana’s unchecked discharge of untreated sewage and industrial waste is responsible for the hazardous ammonia levels in Delhi’s water.
BJP Rejects Charge Of ‘Water Terrorism’
All hell broke after the allegation. The BJP has not only rejected the charge, it also threatened the AAP of taking it to court.
The BJP hit back by holding demonstrations in Haryana. Hitting back at former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the saffron party said that such a person has no right to be in politics. Kejriwal said that “Haryana had mixed poison in the Yamuna”.
Level Of Political Debate Plummets
Political analysts point out that the level of political debate before Delhi Elections has plummeted as both the BJP and the AAP have removed all stops in attacking each other.
Earlier, BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri hit the Delhi Chief Minister below the belt, leaving all political niceties when he said that Atishi had changed her father. He said this while attacking her for changing her name from Atishi Marlena to Atishi.
After Atishi got emotional and wept publicly, the BJP central leadership sanctioned Biduri, who apologised for his comment.
Similarly, another BJP leader Parvesh Singh Verma claimed that if elected, he would make the roads of Delhi as smooth as Priyanka Gandhi’s cheek.
He also came forward to justify his remarks and argued that the RJD leader Lalu Yadav had said that he would make the roads of Bihar as smooth as those of Hema Malini. Parvesh Verma complained that Congress did not complain against this comment.
Political observers are upset with the level of political discourse before the Delhi Polls.
