Delhi Metro To Launch India’s First Dedicated Three-Coach Train Corridor On Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block Route News24 –
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will get ready to roll out the country’s first metro corridor intended for service with three-coach trains on the forthcoming Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block corridor. The corridor is part of the Phase-IV project under Delhi Metro and will cover eight kilometres (five miles), making it the second-shortest corridor in the network, as stated in the DMRC release.
The line is intended to provide improved last-mile connectivity while offering seamless interchange with other metro corridors, it said.
Unique Three-Coach Train Format
The statement indicated that, unlike other metro routes that utilize four, six, or eight coach trains, the new corridor will utilize a three-coach train that has been developed for travel focussed on short distances within the city. The smaller format is anticipated to be cost-effective and flexible in offering a better degree of frequency and operational efficiency, as the new trains will accommodate a significantly high number of daily passengers, the note said.
Demand-Based Train Planning
The DMRC said that this decision was based on a realistic assessment of the passenger demand. Longer trains are needed on high-density routes, while the Lajpat Nagar–Saket stretch is largely for short-distance customers that need more frequent service and operational efficiencies, it added.
Capacity and Passenger Estimates
According to the DMRC, an estimated Peak Hour Peak Direction Traffic (PHPDT) on the corridor would facilitate comfortable travel without exceeding the capacity, as well. The three-coach set of cars is designed for economic viability but retains high quality levels of urban transit operations. Each coach will carry a seating and standing capacity of approximately 300 passengers, meaning a three-coach train will carry about 900 passengers per train, it added.
Corridor Stations and Platform Design
According to the statement, there will be eight conveniently located stations along the corridor between Lajpat Nagar and Saket G Block to enhance accessibility for significant residential and commercial areas. The station platforms have been designed at a length of 74 metres, suitable for operation of trains of three coaches, it said.
Project Timeline and Foundation
“In March 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this project. The construction work has now commenced, and the corridor is expected to be completed by 2028,” a DMRC official said.
