Hot And Humid Conditions To Persist On Friday, IMD Predicts Weekend Showers –Check Full Forecast News24 –


Delhi: Delhi residents are expected to experience a hot day on Friday, May 16 with the maximum temperature reaching around 40 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the possibility of very light rain/thunderstorm/lightning and gusty winds (speed 30-40 kmph) temporarily reaching to 50 kmph during thunderstorm towards evening/night. The sky will remain partly cloudy today. However, there will be little relief for residents from the scorching heat, as rain has been predicted for the weekend. Thunderstorm with are rain expected on Saturday (May 17) and Sunday (May 18).

Delhi Wakes Up To Dust And Poor AQI

While there will be some respite from the heat, humid condition will persist in the national capital. Notably, the IMD has ruled out any heatwave condition for the remainder of the week. It also stated that maximum temperature is currently in the range of 40 to 43°C. Several parts of Delhi reported dust yesterday which reduced visibility at Palam airport. This dust has resulted in deterioration of air quality, as Delhi woke up to bad-quality air, with an AQI of 249, categorised as ‘poor’ on Friday.

The IMD, in its daily weather bulletin, stated that today’s maximum temperatures will remain in the range of 40-43°C. Strong surface winds will prevail during day time. It added that there is no significant weather system over Northwest India at present.

Weather Forecast For The Weekend

Talking about how the weather will remain on Weekend, the IMD forecast indicates of respite from heat. Find the detailed weather forecast for May 17 and 18 below:

May 17: The sky will remain partly cloudy with possibility of very light rain/thunderstorm/lightning and gusty winds (speed 30-40 kmph) temporarily reaching to 50 kmph during thunderstorm in the morning. The maximum temperature will remain 41 degrees Celsius. There will be no heatwave condition on Saturday.

May 18: Partly cloudy sky with sustained surface winds (speed 15-25 kmph) occasionally gusting to 35 kmph on Sunday. The maximum temperature is expected to remain 40 degrees Celsius.

Monsoon Update

The Indian subcontinent is expected to witness an early onset of the Southwest Monsoon in 2025. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the monsoon is likely to set over Kerala ahead of its normal date. Notably, the Southwest Monsoon has begun advancing towards Indian mainland, with rainfall in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andaman Sea and some parts of South Bay of Bengal. The IMD in its recent update announced that the southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 27, with a model error of 4 days on both sides.

Notably, the advance of the southwest monsoon over the Indian mainland is marked by monsoon onset over Kerala. Earlier, the normal onset date for the southwest monsoon was predicted to be June 1. If we look at the data of past five years, there were two occasions when monsoon had begun early – 2022 and 2024. In 2022 and 2024, the monsoon onset was May 29 and May 30 respectively, as per the IMD data.
