“If a Lok Sabha member can fall victim to a chain snatcher in the most secured of the places in the capital in Chanakyapuri that also houses diplomatic corps, then what would be the fate of a common man or a woman questioned R Sudha, Member of Parliament from Tamil Nadu. Unknown men allegedly snatched her gold chain near the Tamil Nadu guest house in Chanakyapuri that has the embassy of Poland located nearby.

The incident occurred on Monday when she was on a morning walk, Sudha told News24. She immediately informed the Chanakyapuri police station and also met the Speaker Om Birla, who assured her of ensuring strict action. She represents the Mayiladuthurai constituency of Tamil Nadu.

Still in a shock, the Member of Parliament said that she could have even died had the gash on her neck been deeper and bigger. “Where is the safety for women, in a state ruled by a woman,” she said.

Slamming the Delhi government and Chief Minister for the state of law and order, the Congress MP said that if it could happen to an MP, and that too a woman, in the most secured of locations in the country, it definitely raises many questions on the state of law and order here.

“So far there has been no update from the police,” she said in response to a question, but to be fair, the speaker promised action. “The speaker told me that a special team has been formed by the police and that they are seriously investigating the issue.

“Yes this morning I met the speaker,” she said and added that she has been trying to raise the issue in Parliament also, but could not get a chance to do that yet.

“It (chain snatching) happened with an Indian like me. What if a foreigner was to have been similarly attacked, then what would be the image of the government,” she questioned adding that the area was housing consulates and embassies of many countries and was the diplomatic area in the city. Does this kind of a thing happens in other countries she questioned.

“The incident happened very close to the Tamil Nadu guest house,” she said. She suffered minor hurt injuries as well. She said she was particularly shocked that the incident took place when Parliament was in session.
