With Republic Day just around the corner, Delhi has stepped into full preparation mode. Security arrangements are being tightened and rehearsals for the grand parade are set to take place over the next few days. As a result, commuters in the national capital should be ready for traffic diversions and road closures at several key locations.

Republic Day Parade Rehearsals: Dates and Timings

The Delhi Police has announced that Republic Day parade rehearsals will be conducted on January 17, 19, 20 and 21. These rehearsals will take place on Kartavya Path, beginning from Vijay Chowk to India Gate, with the route extending up to C-Hexagon.

To ensure the smooth movement of parade contingents, traffic restrictions will be enforced from 10:15 am to 12:30 pm on all four days. During this period, several central Delhi roads will remain either closed or regulated.

Traffic Advisory Issued: Travellers Asked to Plan Ahead

The Delhi Traffic Police has issued a detailed advisory, urging people to avoid the parade route during rehearsal hours. Kartavya Path from Vijay Chowk to India Gate will remain closed for general traffic, while crossings at Rafi Marg, Janpath, Man Singh Road and C-Hexagon will also stay shut.

Officials warned that these closures could lead to congestion in surrounding areas. Motorists are advised to follow traffic signs, remain patient, and strictly follow instructions from traffic personnel deployed on the roads.

Suggested Routes for North–South Travel

For commuters travelling between north and south Delhi, authorities recommend using the Ring Road via Sarai Kale Khan and IP Flyover towards Rajghat. Another option is taking Mathura Road and Bhairon Road through Lajpat Rai Marg to reach Ring Road.

Alternative routes include Aurobindo Marg, Safdarjung Road, Kamal Ataturk Marg and Kautilya Marg, connecting further to Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent and Baba Kharak Singh Marg.

East–West and Central Delhi Connectivity

Those commuting between east and west Delhi can use Bhairon Road and Mathura Road via Ring Road, moving towards Subramaniam Bharti Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg and Prithviraj Road. Another suggested route is Ring Road via ISBT, Chandgi Ram Akhara and Mall Road towards Azadpur.

For travel from south Delhi to Connaught Place or Central Secretariat, commuters can take Mother Teresa Crescent via Park Street towards Mandir Marg or Baba Kharak Singh Marg.

Advice for Daily Commuters

The traffic police has advised residents to plan their journeys in advance, start early, and avoid restricted areas during rehearsal hours. People are also encouraged to use public transport where possible and keep track of official traffic updates to prevent delays during the rehearsal days.
