Noida International Airport update: The opening of the Noida International Airport (NIA) is set to make travel easier for millions of passengers in Northern India. Marking a major milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s aviation network, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the Jewar airport will be inaugurated later this month. He stated that the airport is almost ready and will be inaugurated soon by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The process of obtaining the crucial aerodrome licence is in its final stages.

It will be Uttar Pradesh’s fifth international airport and is expected to be the largest in India once fully developed and operational. People living in Delhi-NCR will be the biggest beneficiaries, who currently rely on IGI airport to travel. The Noida Airport is designed to ease pressure on Indira Gandhi International Airport and boost connectivity in the NCR, western Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states.

The first phase, spreading over about 1,300 hectares, was earlier slated to begin operations in September 2024. However, it faced delays, after missing multiple deadlines. Flights from Jewar Airport will begin to 10 major cities across the country, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata. IndiGo and Air India Express will be operating from here.

Who will benefit?

Passengers from Western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are set to benefit with the opening of this airport. Until now, people from Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Agra, and Mathura had to travel to Delhi (IGI) to catch a flight. The opening of Jewar Airport will reduce travel time for people from these cities by 2 to 3 hours. It will also be a conveniently located airport for passengers from Faridabad and Palwal in Haryana.

Business Class and Professionals based in Greater Noida and Noida will largely benefit from this airport. Jewar Airport will be a boon for businessmen and tech professionals working here. They will be able to catch flights directly to their destinations without getting stuck in traffic jams.

For foreign tourists who come to visit Taj Mahal in Agra or Mathura-Vrindavan, Jewar Airport will act as a gateway. They will be able to reach Agra within a few hours of landing via the Yamuna Expressway, which will significantly boost tourism in UP.

Delhi’s IGI Airport often experiences flight congestion and long queues. The opening of Jewar Airport will reduce traffic and passenger load at Delhi, resulting in less crowding and comfort for passengers traveling to and from Delhi.
