The Best & Beast On OTT  During April 2025 News24 –

There was a lot of activity on the streaming platform in April, not much of it of any validity beyond the immediate, let alone staying power. Most of all, April 2025 would be remembered as the month when Netflix India hit the rockbottom of creativity with Jewel Thief, a film so inexcusably awful it would take analysts years to unravel its layers of mediocrity. A question Netflix should be asking is, how did something so putrid get approved? Producers and actors with clout should think before committing themselves to such crimes of creativity. Remember, if you think only of the zeroes on the cheque, you soon end up as a zero.

Amazon’s Test, though a masterpiece compared with Jewel Thief, was more a test of our patience. A potentially promising plot squandered in vapid direction. Amit Golani’s Logout was a better product than the other OTT feature films in April, though still not good enough to redeem the viewing quality of the month.

The serials were not quite as catastrophic as the films. Rohit Jugraj’s Chamak went into the same Punjabi landmine of music and crime as Imtiaz Ali’s Chamkila. One of the pleasures of watching the series was to see the startling transformation of actor Paramvir Cheema into Kaala Singh, a mercurial singer who fears none and respects only his own abilities.

The problem here was, there was too much going on that is unfocused, or worse, irrelevant. Frequently the narration moved into places it couldn’t afford to, and I mean that in both the emotional and budgetary sense. The screen saver of the month was Amazon’s Khauf directed by the duo Pankaj Kumar and Surya Balakrishnan. It told us in eight episodes things about life for single girls in Delhi that we may not enjoy hearing; but we nevertheless need to know. Khauf was like an intricate jigsaw with missing pieces and pieces that didn’t really fit in. This absence of symmetry and vindication gave the series a head start as compared with more conventional fright flights. Khauf redeemed a strenuously substandard month on the OTT.
