Aamir Khan is gearing up for the release of his film ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, which is his return to the big screen after the debacle of ‘Laal Singh Chadha’. He recently attended the Waves Summit 2025 and talked about the poor business of some recent Bollywood movies. He also shared his opinion on how OTT platforms are affecting the earnings of theatrical films.
Sharing his views on poor theatrical business on OTT, Aamir said at Waves Summit 2025, “Earlier, films would come in theatres and a year later it would be on satellite. Then it came down to 8 months, 6 months. What happens is I have a choice as the audience to watch the film in theatres as it releases or wait for six months to watch it on satellite.”
He further added, “If I have to be honest with my audience while marketing my film, I have to tell them my film is releasing, but all those who are on a particular subscription have bought my film, they don’t need to come to the theatres. The ones who are not on this OTT, please come. This is the communication I have to make with honesty, but it is awkward. The window between theatrical and OTT is too small. You’re killing your own business.”
Further emphasising on the business model of OTT and theatres, he shared, “It is a funny business model. Often, we have discussions about why films are not doing well. You are telling the audience not to come; that’s why they’re not doing well. Often, it goes into we’re not making good films. That is a separate topic. Whether your film is good or bad, this business model doesn’t make sense to me. Good or bad film doesn’t matter, what’s your business model?”
Talking about Aamir’s upcoming project, he will star in Sitaare Zameen Par and it will release in theatres on June 20, 2025. The movie also stars Genelia D’Souza in the lead role.
