Sonu Nigam Responds To Kannada Song Row, Denies Disrespect To Community: ‘I love Kannadigas They…’

Sonu Nigam has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent performance in at East Point College of Engineering and Technology Bengaluru. The controversy erupted after a few audience members allegedly demanded and threatened him to sing in Kannada during his concert.

In a video shared on his Instagram Saturday evening, captioned “just love” Nigam addressed the controversy revealing that four to five students aggressively insisted him to sing songs in Kannada while he was performing “While I was singing my first song, there was a bunch of four-to-five students who were not demanding, but actually threateningly asking me to sing in Kannada. There were many people in the audience who tried to stop them and asked them to not cause disturbance” Nigam explained.

He further stated “Unn paanchon ko yeh yaad dilana aur batana bahut zaruri tha ki Pahalgam mein jab pant utaari gayi thi, tab bhaasha nahin poochi gayi thi. I love Kannadigas. They are extremely sweet and beautiful people, and I hold them very close to my heart. So, please do not generalise them. Sirf chaar-panch ladke the jo meri aankhon mein dekh ke gusse se bol rahe the…Har jagah iss tarah ke log hote hain.” referring to a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, asserting that language should never divide humanity.

He added, “So, it’s important to not allow them to threaten you as an audience. Saari duniya pyaar se aapke liye aayi hai… I had a one-hour set of Kannada songs. Jo log uksaate hain unhe usi samay rokna bahut zaruri hai. Pyaar ki bhoomi mein nafrat ke beej agar koi bo raha hai toh ussey rokna padega kyunki baad mein woh fasal humein hi kaatni hai.”

About The Controversy

Sonu Nigam recently lost his cool at the concert in Bengaluru after a rude fan asked him to sing in Kannada. Addressing the crowd, Sonu said on stage, “Mujhe accha nahi laga ki waha ek ladka jiski umar, jitni uske umar nahi hogi use pehle toh main Kannada gaane garaha hoon (I didn’t like the boy whose age, I have been singing Kannada songs before he was born). He was so rudely threatening me, ‘Kannada, Kannada’. Yahi kaaran hai, Pahalgam mein jo hua hai na? Yahi kaaran hai jo karrahe ho, jo kiya tha na abhi? Dekho toh kaun saamne khada hai. I love Kannadigas, I love you guys (This is the reason what happened in Pahalgam. This is the reason, what you did just now. Look at first who is standing in front of you).”

The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), a pro-Kannada organization filed a police complaint against the singer. The FIR read: “Sonu Nigam’s statements have caused severe distress to the Kannadiga community. By equating a simple cultural request to sing a Kannada song with a terrorist act, Shri Nigam has portrayed Kannadigas as intolerant or violent, which is contrary to their peace-loving and harmonious nature.”
