What Is Pay-Per-View Model? Know About This Method As Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par Likely To Adopt It To Skip OTT Release
Aamir Khan will soon return to the big screen with his upcoming film ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’. In an interaction at Waves Summit 2025, the actor talked about the reason why Bollywood movies are not doing a good business over the past few years. He blamed the quick release of films on OTT platforms after their theatrical run. According to reports, Aamir Khan will skip OTT release for Sitaare Zameen Par and will choose the ‘pay-per-view’ method.
What Is Pay-Per-View Method?
In pay-per-view method, the viewers will need to pay specifically for the particular film they want to see. They wouldn’t need to access any OTT platform to get access to the movie of their choice. This method is similar to theatres as the individual will be paying for the movie they want to see. It also gives more benefits to the producers.
According to The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir Khan wants to use this method for Sitaare Zameen Par. A source told the publication, “Aamir doesn’t want to release his films directly on streaming after their theatrical run, as it discourages viewers from watching movies on the big screen. It is also a reason why there is no streaming logo on the poster of Sitaare Zameen Par.”
The decision involves multiple factors. Of course, there is a perception that non- spectacle films are better suited for OTT platforms, which has led many to skip them in theaters. Pay-per-view, however, creates a cinema-like urgency, as viewers would need to pay specifically for the film rather than accessing it freely through a subscription model. This consumer-centric approach benefits both viewers and producers, giving the latter more control over their content. Aamir wants to see how this plays out, so we shall know details in the coming weeks,” the source added.
He recently attended the Waves Summit 2025 and talked about the poor business of some recent Bollywood movies. He also shared his opinion on how OTT platforms are affecting the earnings of theatrical films. Sharing his views on poor theatrical business on OTT, Aamir said at Waves Summit 2025, “Earlier, films would come in theatres and a year later it would be on satellite. Then it came down to 8 months, 6 months. What happens is I have a choice as the audience to watch the film in theatres as it releases or wait for six months to watch it on satellite.”
He further added, “If I have to be honest with my audience while marketing my film, I have to tell them my film is releasing, but all those who are on a particular subscription have bought my film, they don’t need to come to the theatres. The ones who are not on this OTT, please come. This is the communication I have to make with honesty, but it is awkward. The window between theatrical and OTT is too small. You’re killing your own business.”
Talking about Sitaare Zameen Par, it will release in theatres on June 20, 2025. The movie also stars Genelia D’Souza in the lead role.
