The prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2025 is finally here and several movies from around the world are being celebrated at this event. Satyajit Ray’s 1970 film ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’ was also screened at Cannes 2025 and it was attended by veteran actresses Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal.
Sharmila Tagore exuded elegance and grace in a green saree and was accompanied by her daughter Saba Pataudi. Simi Garewal was a sight to behold in a white attire designed by Indian couture label Karleo. Renowned filmmaker Wes Anderson, who is known to be Satyajit Ray’s fan, also attended the screening.
Producer Purnima Dutta, Margaret Bodde, executive director of The Film Foundation, and FHF founder Shivendra Singh Dungarpur were also present at the screening. A 4K restored version of the Bengali-language film was screened at Cannes 2025 in its classic section. It is presented and restored by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project at L’Immagine Ritrovata in collaboration with the Film Heritage Foundation , Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection.
Aranyer Din Ratri, meaning ‘Days and Nights in the Forest, is based on the novel of the same name by Sunil Gangopadhyay. The movie also stars Soumitra Chatterhjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, Rabi Ghosh, Pahari Sanyal, Kaberi Bose and Aparna Sen in the lead roles.
The movie focuses on four friends’ venture to forest of Palmau to escape the mundane city life. Their expedition into the forest turns into a journey of self-discovery.
