2 Punjab cops arrested by vigilance dept on bribery charges

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested two police officials and a citizen for taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh. According to the spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau, the department arrested a Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Bisman Singh, who was earlier posted as SHO at Sadar Police Station in Jalandhar, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Resham Singh posted at the CIA and a common man in a bribery case.

The accused have been arrested on the complaint of one Harjinder Kumar, a resident of Rampur Thoda village in Rupnagar district.

The complainant had approached the Vigilance Bureau and alleged that the above-mentioned sub-inspector had arrested his brother from Hoshiarpur along with his truck in a false case by showing the recovery of poppy husk in the vehicle when he was deputed as an SHO at Nakodar.

The complainant claimed that sub-inspector Bisman Singh through one person named Surjit Singh and ASI Resham Singh had already received Rs 11,00,000 in installments to release his brother and the truck loaded from Srinagar.

He further alleged that though the accused police sub-inspector was transferred to Police Lines Jalandhar, he was still demanding more money through his two other middlemen.

After verification of the facts in the complaint and the material evidence, the vigilance team arrested the police officials and one Surjit Singh for accepting a bribe of Rs 1,00,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.

A case was registered against all the accused under Sections 7, 7-A of the Prevention of Corruption Act and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code at Vigilance Bureau Police Station. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
