Jeera Rice is a fragrant and simple Indian rice dish made with cumin seeds. Three reasons why this dish is a side-tastic! The first is amazing combination of warm earthy flavors of cumin and second it’s fluffy steamed rice perfect to compliment curries or dal. Simple to cook, versatile, and adds a delightful aroma to your meal. Jeera Rice can be served under any casual dinner as well as special occasions because this dish complements a wide range of other foods beautifully.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 1-2 green cardamom pods (optional)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 small cinnamon stick (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 2 cups water (or vegetable broth for added flavor)
  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped (for garnish)

Step By Step Guide

Prepare The Rice

Rinse the basmati rice thoroughly until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 15-20 minutes and drain.

Temper The Spices

Heat ghee or oil in a pan over medium heat.
Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Add the bay leaf, cinnamon stick, and cardamom pods (if using). Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.

Cook The Rice

Add the soaked and drained rice to the pan. Gently stir to coat the rice in the ghee and spices, allowing it to toast for 2-3 minutes.
Add 2 cups of water and salt. Stir gently and bring it to a boil.

Simmer And Cook

Once the water comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let the rice cook for 12-15 minutes.
Once the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked, remove from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.

Garnish And Serve

Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
Serve hot with dal, curry, or any Indian dish of your choice.

Pro Tips

For extra fragrance, you can add a few saffron strands soaked in warm water to the rice before cooking.
You can also add a small piece of ginger and garlic while tempering the spices for added flavor.
For a vegan version, simply use oil instead of ghee.
