Ahmedabad news: The views of officials from various departments such as solid waste management, environmental engineering, the light department, and city engineering regarding the feasibility of the proposed project have already been sought.
Ahmedabad: A crematorium is being planned near the Gyaspur Sewage radiation plant in Ahmedabad to dispose of dead cows in a clean and efficient way. The crematorium will be spread across 4,000 square metres.
The project is being led by some BJP councillors and officials of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to address the problem of dead cows. Currently, the dead cows end up at a landfill site in Pirana.
With the new plan, cows are likely to get a dignified farewell in crematorium equipped with an efficient CNG furnace, according to a report in Times of India.
The views of officials from various departments such as solid waste management, environmental engineering, the light department, and city engineering regarding the feasibility of the proposed project have already been sought.
Officials argue that the capacity of the furnace should be large enough to dispose of 15 carcasses per day which may include other cattle group and stray animals.
“A dedicated crane will be employed to lift the animals and put them in the CNG incinerator. The project is expected to cost around Rs 6 crore,” an AMC official said. The number of dead stray animals, including bovines, may rise to 35-40 especially during the monsoon season.
AMC officials further noted that there is no such big facility throughout the entire country and thus they are likely to invite Expression of Interest (EOI) or Request for Proposal (RFP) to identify qualified partners capable of operating and overseeing this project.
A committee comprising deputy commissioners has been formed to examine different facets of the plan and subsequently present a comprehensive report.
A senior official from the AMC said that the commissioner had arranged a meeting around a month ago. During this meeting, discussions were held regarding the project with Dharmendra Shah, who holds the political charge for the AMC’s BJP body, as well as Mahadev Desai, the chairman of the building committee.
