Water Tank Collapse in Mathura, Deaths Of Two Women


Two individuals lost their lives and 11 others sustained injuries when an overhead water tank collapsed in a densely populated area of Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh, according to police reports on Sunday.

In Mathura’s Krishna Vihar Colony, an incident led to the deaths of two women, identified as Sundari (65) and Sarita (27). The collapse of the overhead water tank also caused damage to nearby structures, with water entering houses as a result.

Those injured in the incident include Saraswati (45), Baby (52), Kamlesh (65), Nikunja (22), Mili (18), Prince (6), Gaurishankar (84), Mahavir (50), Vipindra (34), and Ramesh Chand (66).

Later, Nawab (35), one of the injured individuals, deteriorated in health and was transferred to SN Medical College in Agra.

According to Mathura’s District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar Singh, a 2,500-kilo litre overhead water tank collapsed in Krishna Nagar colony around 5 pm during rainfall. Two women lost their lives and 11 others were injured in the incident, with one critically injured person transferred to Agra. Authorities deployed an Army team, and local fire brigade personnel are conducting rescue operations at the site.

He further mentioned that efforts to clear the debris are ongoing, and there is a possibility that several individuals are still trapped underneath.

The District Magistrate stated that they will investigate the collapse of the water tank, which was completed in 2021, within three years.

He also mentioned that Jal Nigam constructed the water tank as part of the Gangajal Drinking Water Project, with an expenditure of Rs 6 crore.

Following the incident, Shrikant Sharma, BJP MLA from Mathura-Vrindavan, visited the hospital and interacted with the injured.

When questioned about potential action against the contractor responsible for constructing the overhead tank, he responded, “This is a deeply regrettable incident. I have instructed the District Magistrate (DM) to file an FIR and initiate an investigation. I want to reassure the public that we will take stringent measures against those responsible once the investigation is complete.
