The picturesque ski resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir has officially kicked off the second phase of the 5th Khelo India Winter Games 2025, drawing athletes and officials from across the country for a spectacular showcase of winter sports. The opening ceremony took place on Sunday, marking the beginning of a thrilling competition that will run until March 12.
With over 550 athletes participating, the event promises to be a highlight in the winter sports calendar. Competitions on the first day included ski mountaineering, alpine skiing, snowboarding, and Nordic skiing events spanning 5 and 10 kilometers at the scenic Kingdori peak near the Golf Club. The excitement among participants is palpable as they gear up to demonstrate their skills and compete for medals.
To ensure a safe and secure environment for all involved, comprehensive security measures have been put in place. The Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with paramilitary CRPF and other agencies, have established a multi-layered security framework featuring strict access controls, extensive CCTV monitoring, and regular patrols around key venues. This meticulous planning aims to guarantee smooth operations throughout the games.
A medal ceremony was also held today, where winners have been honored for their outstanding performances. Following this, a night ski demonstration will take place at 6:30 PM on the slopes near the ski shop in Gulmarg, showcasing the talents of various skiers. The event will kick off with the national anthem, attended by dignitaries including Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha and Sports Minister Satish Sharma. The evening will also feature an array of entertainment, including a beam light show, scarecrow torch display, trio dance performance, fireworks, and special addresses from esteemed guests.
This year’s Khelo India Winter Games builds upon the success of the first leg held in Ladakh from January 23 to 27, which featured ice hockey and ice skating competitions. As athletes from all corners of India converge in Gulmarg, the spirit of competition and camaraderie is set to shine brightly throughout this prestigious winter sports event.
