Is India On The Brink Of A Major Earthquake After Neighboring Disasters? High-Risk States And Key Details News24 –
In the last two days the neighbouring countries of India are facing major earthquakes. As Myanmar shook, tremors also hit parts of India, including Delhi NCR, Meghalaya, and Manipur, on Friday. A series of earthquakes have hit Pakistan and Tibet also yesterday. The recent disasters in the neighbouring countries have raised concerns about earthquakes in India. A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, March 28, killing over 2,700 people. Experts believe that India will be soon facing the spines of earthquakes. An India Today report citing experts hinted about a potential earthquake which will be having impacting the country more.
Earthquake Alert
The report warns that a massive earthquake, “Great Himalayan Earthquake” (magnitude above 8), could strike due to tectonic activity in Northeast India, where the Indian plate is subducting beneath the Sunda and Burma plates. This could lead to severe earthquakes and tsunamis. Additionally, Central and Peninsular India are at risk of rare but deadly intraplate earthquakes. Despite these risks, India is largely unprepared for such a disaster, raising concerns about potential devastation and inadequate infrastructure readiness.
Myanmar Earthquake
The earthquake in Myanmar occurred due to horizontal movement along the Sagaing Fault, where large sections of land slid past each other in opposite directions. This type of seismic activity is characteristic of strike-slip faults, where stress builds up along tectonic boundaries and is released in sudden shifts, causing earthquakes. The occurrence of a strike-slip fault was similar to some historic earthquakes like the San Andreas Fault in California. It was a shallow, high-magnitude earthquake leading to intense shaking of the surface and visible damage.
States That Could Be Impacted
According to the news report, nearly 59% of India is at risk of earthquakes. Highest risk posses to the states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Northeastern states. Meanwhile cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata lie in dangerous seismic zones. Concerns also arise as buildings do not have proper earthquake protection. This raises the possibility of buildings falling as earthquake strikes, killing more people than the natural disaster itself.
