In a tragic accident, two girls were killed after a container truck collided with a car, when a group of four friends was returning from Nainital on Tuesday, police said. The two girls, 18-year-old Shivani and 16-year-old Simran were travelling in the back seat of the car.
Accident Occurs On Delhi-Lucknow Highway
The crash occurred on the Delhi-Lucknow highway late Tuesday night. The other two passengers in the car, Rahul and Sanju, 22 and 25 years old, respectively, managed to exit the vehicle, but the car’s doors locked on the girls. It took over an hour for the four to escape, NDTC reported.
Wrong Turn Possibly Led By Google Maps
According to the police, they believe the accident happened when the car made a wrong turn, guided by Google Maps. All four friends lived in Rohtak, Haryana, and had just returned to their state after visiting Neem Karoli Baba Ashram in Nainital. The other two passengers are in the hospital following injuries received in the accident.
Collision During Bypass Exit
“A truck was travelling to Rampur from Delhi, while the car was coming towards Delhi when the collision happened. The car was trying to exit a bypass and take a turn towards Delhi,” NDTV quoted Ranvijay Singh, Superintendent of Police, Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh as saying.
Severe Impact and Rescue Efforts
They reported that the impact was so strong that the car was almost crushed and the right side of the car had been damaged by the container truck. The police said that it required at least a dozen persons to put out the smoke, break open the car, and pull out the four friends. In the midst of struggling to get out of the car and waiting for help, two of them, Shivani and Simran, died.
Eyewitness Account And Truck Details
One of the eyewitnesses, Rajesh Kumar, who helped bring one of the injured to the hospital, said, “The car was crossing the road when a truck hit them.”
The container that collided was loaded with cement pipes and tipped over on the roadway. Police observed the driver was likely navigating with Google Maps open on the mobile device found in the vehicle, which possibly resulted in the wrong turn.
