The upcoming expressway connecting Varanasi and Kolkata will be a game changer for the commuters. The expressway which will pass through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal will slash the journey time to 6 hours. The first phase of the project has already started. As per the new update on the project, authorities will allow vehicles to run at a speed of 120 km/h.
Engineers will build the first part of the expressway in 13 steps, covering 27 km—from Varanasi to Chainpur in Kaimur. According to The Indian Express, officials have already acquired the land, and construction is progressing rapidly. This expressway will help improve both business and tourism.
Kolkata To Varanasi Expressway Project
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the projects foundation in 2014 under the Bharatmala Project. Authorities expect the expressway to span between 610 and 690 kilometers. Currently time taken to travel between Varanasi and Kolkata is about 12 to 14 hours. But once they complete the expressway, it will reduce the travel time to just 6 hours.
How Will The Travel Time Be Reduced – Kolkata-Varanasi
Officials stated that a direct route and reduced traffic will reduce the travel time once they complete the expressway. The expressway will start from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. As per reports, the expressway will pass through 18 districts in total.
In Bihar, engineers are building a 244-kilometre stretch, which they expect will reduce travel time from 7 hours to just 3 hours. The government estimates the entire project will cost ₹35,000 crore as part of the Greenfield project. West Bengal will have the longest stretch of the expressway. 323 km of the expressway will go through West Bengal. Uttar Pradesh, which will have 22 km, will be the shortest of all. In Bihar, the road will cover 169 km, and in Jharkhand, 196 km. The entire project will be completed in 13 stages.
Kolkata-Varanasi Expressway To Cover 18 Districts
From Varanasi, it will go into Bihar through Chandauli. In Bihar, it will pass through Bhabua, Sasaram, Aurangabad, and Gaya. Then, it will enter Jharkhand and cover places like Chatra, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Ranchi, and Bokaro. In West Bengal, it will go through Purulia, Bankura, Bishnupur, Panskura, Haldia, and Diamond Harbour. The expressway will end in Kolkata.
