Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is ready to take over as the new Chief Justice of India, replacing Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who will retired today ( May 13, 2025). President Droupadi Murmu will swear in Justice BR Gavai on May 14.
Justice Gavai will serve as Chief Justice for about six months, with his term ending in November 2025 when he will retire.

Early Life and education: Justice BR Gavai was born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra. He became a lawyer on March 16, 1985.
Reports say that Justice Gavai completed his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (B.A.LL.B.) from Nagpur University.
He started practicing law at the Bombay High Court from 1987 to 1990. After 1990, he mainly worked at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, according to the Supreme Court’s website.
His Journey in Law and Justice
Justice BR Gavai worked mainly in Constitutional Law and Administrative Law. He served as the legal counsel for the Municipal Corporations of Nagpur and Amravati, as well as for Amravati University.
He often represented different government bodies and organizations like SICOM, DCVL, and various Municipal Councils in the Vidarbha region.
From August 1992 to July 1993, he was appointed as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Bombay High Court, Nagpur Bench.
Later, on January 17, 2000, he became the Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the Nagpur Bench.
He was made an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003, and became a permanent Judge on November 12, 2005.
Justice Gavai handled all types of cases and worked at the main court in Mumbai, as well as the Benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji.
Justice BR Gavai’s Notable Cases
Justice BR Gavai was part of the five-judge Constitution Bench that gave a major judgment supporting the removal of Article 370. This decision ended the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and allowed its reorganisation.
He was also part of the bench in a well-known case against senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan. This case looked at important issues like free speech and the responsibility of judges.
In another key case, Justice Gavai wrote the main opinion that supported the government’s 2016 Demonetisation Scheme.
