Lalu Yadav Turns 78: Bihar’s former Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo, Lalu Prasad Yadav, has turned 78 today. Wishes have been pouring in for the leader, and there is a wave of happiness among his supporters in Patna. While his role as influential politician and his stature in the state’s political landscape are well known, it is the former Union Railways Minister’s wit and humour that are most admired by the people. The founder of RJD, who later went on to become CM, served Bihar for two terms, from 1990 to 1997.

Lalu Prasad was born in a poor peasant family in Phulwaria, in the Gopalganj district of Bihar on June 11, 1948. He is a lawyer by education. He is B.A.L.L.B, from Patna University. He married Rabri Devi in 1973. Yadav’s first political step was his election as President of the Patna University Students Union in 1970 and was subsequently elected to the 9th Lok Sabha on a Janata Party ticket at Lok Sabha in 1977, at the age of only 29 years, becoming one of its youngest members. It is to the credit of Lalu Prasad that he was successful in leading the Indian Railways from being mired in losses to posting a surplus of nearly Rs 90,000 crores.
