Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Slams Centre’s ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ Move, Calls It An Insult To Democracy News24 –

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday hit out at the Modi government for celebrating West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on June 25.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “The central government says that it will celebrate Samvidhan Hatya Diwas on completing 50 years of Emergency this year. I object to the statement ‘Samvidhan Hatya’… The Constitution is the basis of our rights; it is the mother of democracy. How can they call it Samvidhan Hatya? It is written that June 25 will be celebrated as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas… They could have celebrated Emergency Hatya Diwas also but they are celebrating Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. I completely condemn this idea… Is there democracy in India today? Can every day be Republic Hatya Diwas in a democratic system because every day they are killing the republic, every day they are curtailing the fundamental rights of the people, they are also destroying the economy of the state and all the fundamental rights of the state.”

The Centre had already announced that June 25 will be remembered annually as “Constitution Murder Day” in remembrance of the Emergency declared by the Indira Gandhi government in 1975.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that the day would serve as a reminder of the significant sacrifices endured by those who faced the severe hardships of the 1975 Emergency, highlighting their immense contributions.

“On 25 June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, showing her dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of Indian democracy by imposing an emergency in the country. Lakhs of people were jailed without any reason and the voice of the media was suppressed. The Government of India has decided to celebrate 25 June every year as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’, Shah wrote in a post on X.
