Built For 80K, Film City Loop Now Bears 4 Lakh Vehicles Daily — Inside Noida’s Traffic Chaos News24 –
Film City Loop, the biggest of the traffic bottlenecks in Noida during peak hour, is symptomatic of the menace that afflicts every city, including Noida. It does not require an expert or rocket science knowledge to discover the reason – built for a vehicular population of some 80,000, today the Film City loop bears five times the burden it can bear, and the result is – frustrating traffic jams that add to the searing heat induced driving stress.
And this may well be the common reason for traffic snarls across the country, as thousands of new vehicles enter the road every day. Officials admit that every day even smooth traffic on Sector 14 A road hits the bottleneck at Film City Loop, to address which an elevated road is being constructed from Chilla Border to Mahamaya Flyover. Congestion is also due to two lanes merging with the four-lane traffic at the Chilla border, traffic officials maintain.
This bottleneck is not the only one the commuters in the city have to navigate as there wre several others that make commuting a pain in the city. During peak hours, the problem gets only worse. Frustrated commuters have voiced their concerns on social media platforms, often tagging the traffic police. Traffic police, when it responds, claim that additional personnel were being deployed, but with little visible relief for the commuters as traffic jams remain as they are.
In several areas, road widening, underpass construction, and other infrastructure work are underway to provide relief to the people. The major congestion points in the city include the Film City loop, Bird Feeding Point, Gaur Chowk in Greater Noida, and the stretch from National Highway 09 (NH-09) to Sector 59 Metro Station and back. These spots regularly witness massive traffic congestion during peak hours, forcing people to spend hours to cover a few kilometers.
Film City Loop
Traffic coming from Delhi via the eight-lane Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) flyway narrows down to six lanes in Noida and then splits into three directions: Sector 14A (two lanes), Film City (two lanes), and the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway (three lanes).
While traffic towards Sector 14A generally moves smoothly, congestion occurs at the Film City loop, where two lanes merge with the four-lane traffic of the Chilla Border, creating a major bottleneck.
Officials stated that the road was originally designed to handle 80,000 vehicles per day, but it now accommodates nearly 3 to 4 lakh vehicles daily. To address this, construction of the Chilla Elevated Road from Chilla Border to Mahamaya Flyover is underway.
Additionally, traffic police said that they are using extra personnel and implementing the “stop-and-go” method to manage congestion.
Bird Feeding Point
The Bird Feeding Point near Dalit Prerna Sthal is another major congestion hotspot where traffic from the Noida Expressway and elevated roads from Ghaziabad and Greater Noida merge into just four lanes. Officials confirmed that a proposal to widen the road at this location has been approved, and an additional lane will soon be added to ease congestion.
Gaur Chowk
Gaur Chowk in Greater Noida is infamous for traffic snarls and is often a trending topic on social media. Residents frequently complain about the bottleneck caused by traffic from Parthala Flyover (from Noida) towards Ek Murti and Ghaziabad. Vehicles heading towards the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Crossings Republik, and Greater Noida all converge at Gaur Chowk, leading to major delays.
In 2023, a 600-metre-long, six-lane Parthala Flyover was inaugurated to ease traffic in Greater Noida West. However, the smooth flow of vehicles from Noida via the flyover shifted the congestion point to Gaur Chowk. In response, authorities planned the construction of an underpass.
After a year-long wait, the construction of the Gaur Chowk underpass is now underway. This project brings hope to commuters in Greater Noida West, who often spend hours stuck in traffic during peak times.
The 700-metre-long underpass, running parallel to the 60-metre-wide road, is being built to provide direct connectivity between Greater Noida, Gaur City, and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME), allowing vehicles to bypass Gaur Chowk entirely. Of the total length, 350 metres will lie on each side of the Chowk. The project is estimated to cost around ₹92 crore, with a completion timeline of one and a half years, according to officials.
Traffic From NH-09 To Sector 59
The stretch from NH-09 to Sector 59 and vice versa also faces regular congestion due to a wide concrete U-turn, encroachments, a large roundabout, and the absence of a foot overbridge.
Residents say they often spend over 30 minutes just to cover a 3-kilometre stretch. “I regularly spend more than 30 minutes passing a short stretch near Sector 62 Metro Station. The concerned department should look into the issue and fix the underlying problems. It’s becoming a nightmare every time I use that road,” said Vikram Gupta, a resident of Ghaziabad who commutes daily to Noida for work.
Officials stated that work to reduce the size of the roundabout near the Electronic City Metro Station is currently underway, and a foot overbridge will also be constructed soon.
Akash Yadav, a resident of Noida Sector 19, said, “The traffic police and Noida Authority should identify these major traffic congestion points and work to decongest these areas as soon as possible, because commuting on these stretches is a nightmare. I often try to avoid these routes, but due to the lack of alternate options, it wastes my petrol, time, and also puts strain on my energy.”
A Noida Traffic Police official said, “We are using maximum force to prevent congestion in parts of Noida. Due to high traffic volume and infrastructure issues, traffic slows down at some places during peak hours. We are working in coordination with the concerned department to solve the issues.”
