The Karnataka government has ordered the investigation of the case related to the Dharmasthala burial allegations to be handed over to the Special Investigation Team (SIT). Dakshina Kannada SP Dr. Arun K said that the matter will soon be handed over to the SIT. According to the order issued on July 19, this special team will be headed by DGP Pranab Mohanty of the Internal Security Department. The team will also include IPS officers M. N. Anuchet, Soumya Latha and Jitendra Kumar Dayama.
Home Department Under Secretary S. Ambika informed that the government has decided to form an SIT to conduct a detailed investigation of case number 39/2025 (under section 211 (A), BNS) registered at Dharmasthala police station.
The chairperson of the Karnataka State Women’s Commission, in a letter sent on July 14, mentioned a person who claimed in court that he had buried hundreds of bodies in the Dharmasthala area. The commission has taken cognizance of the statement of the family of a medical student and the reports of human skulls being found in the area, taking it seriously.
The statements of the person mentioned serious crimes like murder, rape, disappearance of women and girl students, and unnatural deaths. Due to this, the Commission had recommended the formation of an SIT for a fair and comprehensive investigation under the leadership of senior officials.
The government has decided that it would be appropriate to form an SIT to investigate the issues raised by the Women’s Commission and the case registered at Dharmasthala police station in depth. Also, related criminal cases registered or likely to be registered in other police stations in the state will also be handed over to the SIT.
The SIT will use the resources available at the Dakshina Kannada District Police Office and will update the DG and IGP on the status of the investigation in real-time. After completion of the investigation, the team will submit its detailed report to the government through the DG and IGP.
