End Of An Era! Indian Postal Department To Discontinue 50-Year-Old Registered Post Service From September 2025 News24 –

The Indian Postal Department has decided to discontinue the Registered Post Service, bringing an end to this 50-year-old reliable service. The service will be phased out from 1 September 2025. The move has been taken as part of the integration of services with Speed Post with the aim of making postal services more modern and efficient.

A Thread Of Trust For Fifty Years

Registered post was considered a cheap, safe and legally valid medium for decades. This service was the first choice of millions of people to send important documents like job offer letters, legal documents and government correspondence. This service was so closely associated with the lives of common citizens that it had become a trusted companion.

Falling Demand, The Truth Of Changing Times

According to government data, while 244.4 million items of registered post were sent in 2011-12, by 2019-20 this number had come down to 184.6 million, a decline of about 25%. The reason for this is the increasing use of digital services and intense competition from private courier and e-commerce companies.

Now Speed Post Will Take Over The Responsibility

The Postal Department has instructed all government, judicial and educational institutions to transfer their work under Speed Post by September 1, 2025. Speed Post, which has been operating since 1986, will now be adopted as an integrated service, which will improve tracking, speed up delivery and make the process more efficient.

Inflation Concerns

However, this change will not be comfortable for everyone. The starting price of registered post was Rs 25.96 + Rs 5 per 20 grams, while Speed Post starts at Rs 41 per 50 grams. That is, Speed Post is expensive by 20-25%. This difference can especially affect rural areas, where post offices are still the main means of contact and where common people, farmers and small traders depend on affordable services.

Moving Into The Technological Era

The department believes that it is important to keep up with the times. Today’s world needs faster, trackable and smarter services. This step is an effort in that direction.

Memories Of A Bygone Era

While speed post will continue to have features like tracking and delivery confirmation, registered post is also associated with people’s emotions and memories. Especially for the elderly and people in villages, it has not just been a service but a symbol of trust.

The roots of this service go back to British rule, when it was introduced as a secure medium to send legally valid documents. It has been widely used by banks, universities, government departments and courts. It also provided proof of delivery, which was accepted as evidence in courts.

Conclusion

The end of registered post is not just the end of a service, but the end of an era. This change is necessary amid the need to move forward in the digital age, but the emotions associated with it are equally deep.
