The incident occurred during her morning walk near the Tamil Nadu Bhawan. The suspect is identified as Sohan Rawat, 24, who the police claim to be a habitual offender. He has 26 prior cases registered against him. He was apprehended after the police identified his blue scooter in the CCTV footage.
In a post on social media platform X, the police mentioned, “The case of snatching of chain of Hon’ble Member of Parliament has been solved. The accused has been arrested and the chain has been recovered.”
The incident took place on Monday morning when Sudha, the first-time MP representing Mayiladuthural constituency, was walking near the Tamil Nadu Bhawan, a little past 6 am, with Salma, who was recently sworn in as MP. An unidentified motorcycle-borne man snatched her gold chain and tore her clothes before fleeing. She also sustained minor injuries. Soon after the incident, Sudha immediately informed the Chanakyapuri police station and also met the Speaker Om Birla, who assured her of ensuring strict action. The MP wrote to the Union Home Ministry about the incident, saying she had been left traumatised by the incident.
Speaking to reporters later, Sudha said, “No one came to help despite our screams.”
Congress MP while speaking to News 24, Slammed the Delhi government and Chief Minister for the state of law and order, the Congress MP said that if it could happen to an MP, and that too a woman, in the most secured of locations in the country, it raises many questions on the state of law and order here.
“The incident happened very close to the Tamil Nadu guest house,” she said. She suffered minor hurt injuries as well. She said she was particularly shocked that the incident took place when Parliament was in session.
What She Told News 24
Talking to News 24, the member of Parliament said that she could have even died had the gash on her neck been deeper and bigger. “Where is the safety for women, in a state ruled by a woman,” she said.
“So far there has been no update from the police,” she said in response to a question, but to be fair, the speaker promised action. “The speaker told me that a special team has been formed by the police and that they are seriously investigating the issue.
She raised concerns about the inadequate security in an area housing high-profile offices and residences. She noted that the area hosts consulates and embassies of numerous countries, serving as the city’s diplomatic hub, and questioned whether such incidents occur in other nations. “It (chain snatching) happened with an Indian like me. What if a foreigner was to have been similarly attacked, then what would be the image of the government?”
