A Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) of police was hacked to death near Kudimangalam in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district on Tuesday evening, while responding to a domestic disturbance call. The victim, 52-year-old Shan Mugavel from Alangiyam, was attached to the Kudimangalam police station. On receiving a call to the emergency number 100, he rushed to a farm in Kudimangalam to investigate a quarrel between a father and his son.
According to India TV, Moorthy and his son Thangraj, both working on a local farm, were under the influence of alcohol when an argument between them broke and turned into a violent brawl. The altercation prompted nearby residents to alert the police.
Shan Mugavel reached the spot and attempted to de-escalate the situation. He also called an ambulance to take Moorthy away. It was at this moment that Thangraj allegedly attacked the officer with a sickle, striking him on the head. The brutal blow took the victim’s life on the spot.
Thangraj also tried to attack Shanmugavel’s driver, who managed to flee and alert nearby police units. The police have now launched a manhunt to trace Thangraj, who is currently absconding.
Shanmugavel’s body has been sent to the district government hospital for postmortem. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 30 lakh to support them.
