Cloudburst Triggers Widespread Destruction In Chamoli’s Tharali; Several Feared Missing; Houses Damaged, Roads Blocked News24 –
A cloudburst has caused severe destruction in the Tharali area of Chamoli district. Debris entered Tharali market, the tehsil premises, and several homes, damaging multiple vehicles. A young girl lost her life in Sagwara village, and one person is reported missing, as reported by Aaj Tak. The Tharali-Gwaldam and Tharali-Sagwara roads remain blocked. SDRF teams are carrying out relief and rescue operations at the site.
Chamoli DM, Sandeep Tiwari said, There is a possibility of a lot of damage due to the cloud burst in Tharali tehsil of Chamoli last night. A lot of debris has come due to the cloudburst, due to which many houses, including the SDM residence, have been completely damaged.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote on X, “Late last night, a tragic report of a cloudburst was received in the Tharali area of Chamoli district. The district administration, SDRF, and police have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. In this regard, I am in constant contact with the local administration and am personally closely monitoring the situation. I pray to God for everyone’s safety.”

According to the Meteorological Department, “In the next 24 hours (Orange Alert from 22.8.2025, 2:05 PM to 23.8.2025, 2:05 PM) there is a possibility of thunderstorms/lightning and very intense rain at different places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Nainital, Almora and Udham Singh Nagar such as Kotdwar, Rishikesh, Gangotri, Kashipur, Kedarnath, Joshimath, Mussoorie, Munsyari, Lohaghat, Ranikhet, Khatima and adjoining areas”.
An orange alert is issued when heavy rainfall is anticipated, typically exceeding 115.6 mm and up to 204.4 mm within 24 hours. Apart from this, the Uttarkashi district administration is working tirelessly to open the temporary lake formed in Syanachatti due to debris blocking the Yamuna River. The efforts are being led by District Magistrate Prashant Arya, who has assured residents that the lake will be drained soon and all necessary safety measures are being taken. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade, and irrigation department have reached the site, utilizing rafts to navigate the lake. Despite the progress, full channelisation has not been achieved yet due to swamp conditions, prompting the relief and rescue team to consider alternative options.
“There has been a lot of damage due to the flash floods. A 20-year-old woman named Kavita has been buried, and a man named Joshi is missing. NDRF and SDRF teams moved to the spot last night. The road has been blocked due to the floods and people are facing a lot of problems. The administration is engaged in relief work. Apart from this, we have set up relief camps. The District Magistrate has left early in the morning and has reached the spot, and relief work is going on there,” said Chamoli ADM Vivek Prakash.
Meanwhile, in Syanachatti of Uttarkashi district, the situation has been returning to normalcy after the water level of the temporary lake has significantly decreased, and due to the continuous efforts of the administration, the bridge over the Yamuna has become visible.
District Magistrate Prashant Arya has been in the area since Friday, monitoring the ongoing work. The administration said that the water level of the lake has decreased significantly.
