According to the police, Vipin asking her to stop making Insta reels and videos and Nikki rejecting it often led to heated arguments and the subsequent violence.

On August 21, a few hours before the attack, Nikki and Kanchan argued with their mother-in-law about a reel they were recording in a small studio inside their house. Police said this fight later led to the shocking incident where Nikki was doused with kerosene and set on fire. Shocking videos, said to be recorded by Kanchan, show Vipin pulling Nikki by her hair and taunting her to “make a video.” Another video shows Nikki on fire, struggling and falling while coming down the stairs.

Media reports also mention a dispute involving ₹35 lakh dowry. According to these reports, Nikki’s brother was married to a girl from Pali Palli village. Later, he got involved with another woman from a different religion and left his wife. It is said that Vipin’s father, Satyaveer Bhati, intervened, and a settlement of ₹35 lakh was reached before the Panchayat to maintain the relationship.
