Heavy rain on Tuesday afternoon, August 26, 2025, caused a landslip on the route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in the Trikuta hills, leading to the death of at least nine people and injuries to fourteen others. Several people were feared trapped under the debris as rocks and boulders came crashing down around 3 p.m., catching pilgrims and visitors off guard. In response to the heavy rain, the Jammu and Kashmir government ordered the closure of all schools and offices, except for essential services and law and order departments. The pilgrimage to the shrine in the Reasi district was also suspended for safety reasons.
The travel advisory was issued by the Jammu and Kashmir traffic police on Thursday morning. Commuters have been advised not to travel on NH-44 till the weather improves and the road is clear.
Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) is closed for vehicular movement due to landslides, shooting stones, and incessant rains along the route. However, a decision regarding vehicular movement on the Jammu-Pathankot NHW will be taken tomorrow after assessing road conditions.
