PM Modi’s visit to China comes at a crucial time, when there has been a stir at the global level after the US tariffs. During his visit, PM Modi will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which is being held in Tianjin. His last visit to China was in June 2018 to attend the SCO summit. Chinese President Xi Jinping visited India for the second informal summit in October 2019.
He will hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidellines of the event. During the course of the summit, PM Modi is also expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
The summit will review 25 years of the organisation’s achievements and adopt a ten-year development strategy. China is hosting the SCO Summit for the fifth time, with President Xi Jinping chairing the proceedings. Over 20 heads of state and 10 leaders from international organizations are expected to attend.
The SCO comprises 10 members including India. The other countries are Belarus, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. India has been a member of the SCO since 2017, having been an observer since 2005. During its membership period, India has held the chair of the SCO Council of Heads of Government in 2020 and of the SCO Council of Heads of State from 2022 to 2023.
