Amit Khare, an ex-bureaucrat, has now been appointed as Secretary to the newly elected Vice President, C.P. Radhakrishnan, pursuant to an order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. This appointment is for three years, and Khare was appointed by an official order only from the Department of Personnel and Training, and in a contract capacity, the order takes effect from the date of assumption of charge, and includes rank and pay of a Secretary.
The official order reads, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Amit Khare, IAS (Retd.), 1985 batch, Jharkhand Cadre, as Secretary to the Vice-President of India.”
Who is Amit Khare?
Amit Khare is a retired 1985-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, has been Advisor to the Prime Minister since October 2021. In that capacity, he was handling social sector subjects under the Prime Minister’s Office and he was also part of the team when the landmark National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 was drawn up and subsequently implemented.
Khare has held some significant positions throughout his entire career. He was earlier Secretary, Information & Broadcasting; Secretary, School Education & Literacy; and Secretary, Higher Education at the central level. Other than the education and information sectors, Khare is also known for bringing to light the ‘fodder scam’ of Bihar.
Khare’s education
Khare graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and holds a postgraduate degree in Business Administration from IIM Ahmedabad. He also completed his schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Hinoo in 1977.
New Vice President – C. P. Radhakrishnan
Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan was sworn in as India’s 15th Vice President on Friday at an oath-taking ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office during the ceremony that was attended by senior officials from the government. Radhakrishnan was the NDA’s candidate. He won the election held on September 9 with 452 votes defeating Opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy who received 300 votes. Prior to his nomination, Radhakrishnan was the Governor of Maharashtra.
