At least 90 students from the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) school, located in the Pakke Kesang district of Arunachal Pradesh, marched for 65 km to highlight the alleged acute lack of teachers at their school. The students began their march from Nyangno village, carrying placards. It was a confrontation with the education department of Arunachal Pradesh. The students marched through the night and reached the district headquarters in Lemmi in the morning.
The Class 12 and Class 11 students of KGBV led the march and protested for an immediate posting of teachers for the Geography and Political Science students. The students carried posters that read “a school without a teacher (is) just a building”.
The girls wearing school uniforms marched on the road and chanted slogans in protest. They said when the school officials were approached about their repeated request for teachers there was no engagement with the hostel warden or school authorities.
The headmistress of KGBV said that they were all aware of the shortage of Geography and Political Science teachers, but asserted that there were enough tutors for the other subjects. She further noted that those students had already completed the curriculum for the half-yearly examinations.
