Heavy rains are likely to occur in the next 24 hours, as a low-pressure area is expected to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal. The Regional Meteorological Department has issued an intimation.

For the next 24 hours, the department has predicted heavy rain in the ghat areas of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Tiruppur, Theni, and Tenkasi districts in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

For Chennai and its neighboring districts, the IMD Department has forecast spells of rain with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning as well. The region has been witnessing rainfall over the last two to three days, following the onset of the North-East Monsoon on October 16.

Meteorological Department Warning

The Meteorological Department has stated that an upper cyclonic circulation persists over the South Andaman Sea and the adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to 1.5 km above sea level.

“Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21, 2025. It is expected to move northwestwards and further concentrate into a depression over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 48 hours,” the bulletin stated.

Wind speeds are expected to reach 35 kmph to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, off the South Tamil Nadu coast, over the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin area.

The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea. Those already out in the deep sea over the South Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal are advised to return by the morning of October 21.
