Woman Dies While ‘Trying To Escape Drunk Men’; Police Reject Eve-Teasing Claims News24 –

Kolkata: A shocking incident came to light from West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district after a 27-year-old woman who met with a road accident reportedly died on Sunday night while allegedly trying to run away from a few drunk men. The police, however, denied the statement that she was trying to flee from eve-teasers who were following her vehicle. The deceased, a resident of Chandannagar in Hooghly district, has been identified as a working professional.

‘Men Passed Vulgar Comments To The Victim’

According to reports, the victim along with three of her colleagues were inside the car. They were traveling to Gaya for some work when the accident resulted in her death while the other three sustained injuries. There are no immediate reports of any arrests made so far. A senior police officer told news agency PTI on Monday that the deceased had stopped to refill their car at a petrol pump when another car with five people inside it began to chase them. These men who passed vulgar comments to the victim abandoned their vehicle and ran away, he added.

Police Denies Eve-Teasing Claims

However, later on Monday evening, the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate refuted the claims of eve-teasing or chase. They noted it was the victim who was racing the other vehicle. Hindustan Times quoted the Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Choudhary as saying, “There was no eve-teasing in this case. We have spoken to the driver and the co-passenger of the victim’s car. Technical evidence from CCTV footage shows that the victim’s car was actually chasing the other vehicle. It started when the victim’s car overtook the other vehicle, leading to an accident.”
