Mumbai: In a shocking incident that occurred on Saturday at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, a student allegedly died by suicide after jumping from his hostel building. According to Mumbai Police, the 22-year-old student was a resident of Delhi and was in his fourth year, studying in the science stream at the institute, news agency ANI reported.
He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The deeply disturbing incident, which occurred around 2:30 am, has sent shockwaves across the student community. According to one eyewitness, another student from the hostel was on a phone call on the terrace when the student jumped. Meanwhile, an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered at Mumbai’s Powai Police Station. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the student’s death.
The institute took to its X account to extend condolences to the student’s family and loved ones. It wrote, “It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the untimely passing of our final-year student, Mr. Rohit Sinha (22) (MEMS Department), in a tragic incident that occurred late last night. The Powai Police are currently investigating the matter. The untimely death has shocked us to the core, and we share the grief. It is very unfortunate that a promising career came to a premature end in such a manner. His death has saddened the entire community on the IIT campus. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We pray they find the strength to cope with this immense loss.”
