The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced a complete stoppage of Cauvery water supply from today. Earlier, the board had announced a three-day water supply cut from Monday to Wednesday. The supply shutdown is likely to continue till 1 pm on Wednesday, September 17.
The water supply disruption is due to maintenance work. Maintenance and repair work will be carried out at Phase-1 and Phase-2 pumping stations under Cauvery Stage I, II, III and IV from 6 am on September 16 to 6 am on September 17, leading to a total 24-hour supply disruption.
The BWSSB is carrying out this work to ensure smooth operation and long-term efficiency of pumping stations and main pipelines, which are extremely critical for uninterrupted water supply across the city.
Affected areas in Bengaluru:
The Cauvery water supply shutdown will have the greatest impact in the core areas of the city, where residents are completely dependent on BWSSB supply as borewells are either non-existent or have dried up.
The outskirts of the city may also be affected as many households are not yet connected to the BWSSB network and depend on private water tankers.
BWSSB chairman V. Ram Prasad Manohar said in a press note, “This work is being carried out to ensure smooth operation and long-term efficiency of the Cauvery pumping stations and pipelines, to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply in Greater Bengaluru in the future.”
