Jaipur SMS Hospital Fire- The tragic fire that fire broke out in one of the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, killing six patients on Sunday night has left everyone shocked. Kin of the victims have alleged staff negligence and lack of safety measures resulting in ICU blaze. The fire, attributed to a short circuit, resulted in the unfortunate loss of six lives, confirmed SMS Hospital Trauma Centre In-charge Dr. Anurag Dhakad. Relatives of patients admitted to the ICU recounted harrowing experiences exposing critical lapses in safety measures at the hospital.

A grieving family member of one of the victims of the Jaipur SMS Hospital fire shared the tragic sequence of events. He revealed that the patient, 25-year-old Pintu, was about to be discharged in a day or two; however, he lost his life in the tragic fire.
“It was my aunt’s son. He was 25 years old and named Pintu. When smoke came out at 11.20 pm, we had informed the doctors that the patients might have problems. Then gradually the smoke increased. As the smoke increased, the doctors and those working downstairs in the compound all left. Then suddenly there was so much smoke that we couldn’t remove the patients. Even then, we removed four or five patients. My aunt’s son was there. He was fine. They were about to discharge him in a day or two,” he said.

Another man who lost his mother alleged negligence on the part of hospital staff, stating that there was no equipment to extinguish the fire that erupted in the ICU. “The ICU caught fire. There was no equipment to extinguish it. There were no cylinders or even water to douse the fire. There were no facilities. My mother passed away,” he told ANI.

Puran Singh, a relative of a patient, said, “When there was a spark, there was a cylinder beside it. The smoke spread throughout the ICU, causing everyone to flee in panic. Some managed to rescue their own patients, but mine was left alone in the room. As the gas spread further, they shut the gates.”
Another relative, Narendra Singh stated that he was initially unaware of the fire and also alleged lack of equipment to douse the fire. “There was a fire in the ICU, and I didn’t even know. I had come downstairs to have dinner at the time. There wasn’t even any equipment to douse the fire–no facilities were available. My mother was admitted there,” he said.
