Delhi AQI: As winter sets in, a thick layer of smog has once again engulfed parts of the national capital, pushing air quality levels into the “very poor” category. Delhi has been struggling with hazardous pollution levels for the past week, as dropping temperatures, stagnant winds, meteorological conditions and rising vehicular and industrial emissions continue to trap pollutants close to the ground.
Delhi AQI: Air quality remains ‘Very poor’
According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 312 on Friday, November 7 at 7 am, which comes under “very poor’ category. Anand Vihar, Akshardham, Dwarka, Kartavya Path, Safdarjung reported thick layer of smog and deteriorating air quality levels. Notably, Delhi’s air quality had sharply dropped ahead of Diwali, with the AQI rising above 200 on October 14. This marked the first significant decline in air quality since June, 2025. In response, GRAP-2 (Graded Response Action Plan) restrictions have been implemented to help curb pollution and protect public health during this period.

Several areas across Delhi recorded alarming air quality levels on Friday morning, with many localities crossing the 300 mark on the Air Quality Index (AQI) scale, placing them in the “very poor” category.

Amid deteriorating air quality levels, residents in Delhi have raised concerns over the rising pollution and its impact on health. Sri Krishna, who was out for a morning walk at Kartavya Path, told ANI, “It has become colder in the last two to three days, and as the temperature is dropping, the pollution level is rising. Pollution is so high that it should be tackled on a war footing, as much as possible.” Another resident, Sadhna, echoed similar concerns, noting, “It has been colder for the past two days and the pollution is really high; I can feel irritation in my throat.”

As the sharp increase in AQI poses health risks, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues. Authorities have been urged to strengthen environmental measures and implement stricter pollution control strategies to combat deteriorating air quality levels. While, citizens especially children and the elderly, are advised to limit outdoor activities and use masks when venturing outside.
