Chennai Rains: Will schools remain closed today? IMD predicts more showers across Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu continues to face widespread rainfall, raising concerns about the safety of students and the general public. Although the intensity of rain has reduced slightly, authorities are still monitoring the weather very closely. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts, including Chennai, as light to moderate rain with occasional thunderstorms is expected to continue.
School Safety Concerns Grow Amid Heavy Rains
The recent heavy rains have forced schools in some Tamil Nadu districts to shut temporarily. Districts like Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu have already declared a holiday for schools as a precaution. These decisions were made keeping in mind the past instances of severe flooding and the risk students face while travelling.
Officials explained that waterlogging, slippery roads, and unstable school structures could pose dangers. Therefore, closing schools for a short period is considered a preventive measure to avoid any accidents.
Will Schools in Chennai Be Closed Today?
For Chennai, the situation is still uncertain. Even though there is ongoing rain, no official holiday has been announced for November 20, 2025. The government has advised parents to stay in touch with school authorities for the latest updates.
To ensure student safety, the Education Department has instructed schools to check building roofs, repair water-damaged walls, clear stagnant water, and secure open areas. These steps are aimed at reducing risks during the ongoing monsoon season.
More Rain Expected for Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu may not get relief soon. The IMD yellow alert remains in place from 19 to 22 November, with heavier rainfall likely on November 23 and 24. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also expected in several parts of the state.
The low-pressure system that caused earlier heavy rain has now moved closer to the Sri Lankan coast. Meanwhile, another system is expected to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal on November 22. Weather experts believe this new system may intensify within 48 hours and move west-northwest, bringing more rain to the Tamil Nadu coastline.
Even though a cyclonic circulation near Kerala has weakened, fresh disturbances over the Bay of Bengal could prolong wet conditions in the state.
Chennai to See Intermittent Showers
Chennai residents may experience some relief as Wednesday is likely to bring lighter spells of rain. However, intermittent showers are expected to continue through the weekend because of the new weather systems forming in the Bay of Bengal.
