Former England Footballer George Easthum Passes Away At 88 News24 –


Former England footballer George Eastham passed away at the age of 88 on December 20, Friday. The information was shared by his former club Stoke City. Easthum was the member of England 1966 Football World Cup team and was a midfielder who played for big Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Newcastle United. In a career which spanned over two decades, Easthum played a total of 19 international football matches for England.

George Easthum was basically renowned for his lethal left foot kick and is often regarded as the legend of Stoke City. The latter scored the winning goal in the 1972 Premier League final and helped his team win the match by 2-1 against Chelsea. Easthum played over 190 matches for Stoke City whereas also managed the club from 1977 to 1978.

George Easthum Passes Away

In the year 1973, George Easthum was honoured with the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services in the field of football. As a matter of paying respect, Stoke City players will pay respect to the former England footballer in their Premier League match against Sheffield United. Stoke City shared a statement on their official website, which read, “The Stoke City family is immensely saddened by the passing of club legend George Eastham OBE at the age of 88.”

“George was signed by the Potters for a £35,000 fee shortly after being part of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning squad. He went on to represent the club for eight seasons in the top division of the English game and was a two-time FA Cup semi-finalist in red and white. He is perhaps best remembered as the man whose goal secured the 1972 League Cup in a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Wembley. The Potters will wear black armbands for the fixture against Sheffield Wednesday [on Saturday] as a mark of respect. Our thoughts are with George’s family and friends at this difficult time”, the statement added.
