KKR Qualification Scenario EXPLAINED: Washout Against PBKS A Big Setback For KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders chances of qualifying for the IPL 2025 playoffs suffered a blow after their fixture against Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens was abandoned following rain. Punjab had posted an imposing total of 201/4, while KKR had reached 7/0 through the first over when unexpected rain with dust storms caused the suspension, ultimately leading to a washout.

Washout In KKR Vs PBKS Match

This was the first official no-result of the season for the IPL 2025. Although rain interrupted the Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Punjab Kings match on April 18, that match was played down to 14 overs per team and still resulted in a result. With the washout, KKR and Punjab Kings each received a point. Therefore, KKR are still seventh with 7 points from 9 games, while Punjab now sits at fourth with 11 points.

In order to make the playoffs, teams tend to need 16 points minimum — normally with 8 victories. At present, they have only 3 wins and thus need to win all of their remaining matches of five in order to ensure a top-four place.

Possibilities Available For KKR To Qualify

Win 5 of their remaining 5 games (5-0): They would gain 17 points, and this would very likely secure a spot in the playoffs for them.

Win 4 and lose 1 (4-1): Finishing on 15 points may just be sufficient based on net run rate and outcome of other results.

Win 3 and lose 2 (3-2): 13 points may still fall short unless other teams happen to lose high-stakes matches — outside outcomes would have to favor KKR.
Win 2 and lose 3 (2-3): They’ll finish on 11 points, which most probably won’t get them through.

Win only 1 or lose all 5 (1-4 / 0-5): KKR would have either 9 or 7 points, respectively — i.e., out of the playoff contention.
