A few weeks before the England Test selection meeting, Rohit Sharma declared his sudden retirement from test match cricket. Rohit confirmed his position as Test captain after self-dropping from the fifth Test against Australia while making it clear he was not retiring from cricket. Initially confusing many fans Rohit posted time-wise in a manner that almost functioned as an homage to MS Dhoni. At precisely 19:29 Rohit Sharma posted the announcement. MS Dhoni made his official international retirement announcement via social media at 19:29 on August 15th, 2020.

Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket, It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.” Rohit wrote on his Instagram story

Dhoni’s Backing To Rohit

During the early stages of Rohit’s career Dhoni appointed him to open the batting line-up. Rohit expressed deep gratitude to have played under Dhoni’s leadership. The cricket board allows Rohit Sharma to participate in matches played at the one-day international level. MS Dhoni supported Rohit Sharma for six years as he phased out Sehwag alongside Gambhir to make space for Rohit. During his time under Dhoni Rohit found this method as a way to show respect for his previous captain. The revival of Rohit’s cricket career owes most of its success to Dhoni’s guidance. The responsibility to secure his position in white-ball teams arrived for Rohit in early 2013 when Dhoni chose him to open.
