In what turned out to be a battle to avoid the wooden spoon, Rajasthan Royals (RR) emerged victorious against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), closing their IPL 2025 campaign with a well-earned win — their fourth of the season. The result ensures RR finish 9th on the table, while CSK, for the first time in their storied IPL history, finish at the bottom.

Batting first, CSK stumbled early and never quite recovered. They lost key wickets in the powerplay and despite a brief resurgence led by Dewald Brevis, the innings lacked the firepower needed at the death. Brevis’s clean hitting revived some hopes, but a flurry of late wickets meant CSK finished with a below-par 187. Mhatre showed glimpses of promise, but like much of CSK’s season, the innings fizzled out just when momentum was needed.
RR’s chase began with a dose of fortune. Yashasvi Jaiswal was handed a lifeline on the very first ball, as MS Dhoni, usually so reliable, was late to move to his left. That drop proved costly. Vaibhav and captain Sanju Samson stitched a confident partnership before both fell in quick succession to Ravichandran Ashwin. With Riyan Parag failing cheaply, CSK sensed an opening.

But RR had other ideas. Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer took matters into their own hands and ensured there were no further hiccups. The duo batted with authority and calm, seeing RR home comfortably in the end — a rarity for a side that had struggled with run chases all season.
This was only RR’s second successful chase in 10 attempts this season (the other coming against GT), but it came with a touch of confidence and clarity that had eluded them for much of the campaign.
For CSK, this marks a forgettable season — 10 losses in total, equalling their worst record from 2022. Most worrying has been their inability to defend totals, having failed to win even once in five attempts while defending.

10 – 2025*
8 – 2012
8 – 2020
It was another listless outing for a side that has looked short on inspiration all season. Whether it was poor starts with the bat, leaky bowling at crucial junctures, or missed opportunities in the field, CSK’s 2025 campaign will go down as one of the most underwhelming in their history.
For Rajasthan, this win doesn’t salvage the season, but it does give them something to take forward. They showed composure in a chase, finally, and played like the more assured unit. For CSK, it’s back to the drawing board — a painful but necessary reset awaits.
