GT Vs LSG: Akash Singh Revives ‘Notebook Celebration’ In Digvesh Rathi’s Absence

IThe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been crying to put an end to the ‘notebook” celebration but it has again made a comeback. Lucknow Super Giants left-arm pacer Akash Singh once again fanned the controversy by doing the now-viral celebration after getting Gujarat Titans’ superstar Jos Buttler out in their match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Back in the field in the 10th over after receiving a painful impact from a dashing Shubman Gill drive in the 6th, Akash left his mark immediately. He dismissed Buttler with a shrewdly bowled slower ball that utterly dazed the erstwhile England captain, flying back onto his stumps. Considering Buttler’s match-winning potential, his dismissal was a turning point in the high-scoring match and celebrations within the LSG camp were imminent.

Nevertheless, Akash’s unique style of celebration raised eyebrows. In a gesture which appeared to be an ode to teammate Digvesh Singh Rathi, Akash glanced at the dugout and replicated the offending notebook celebration. This celebration, made famous by Digvesh, had earlier seen him suspended by the BCCI after repeated warnings, disciplinary fines, and an angry altercation with Abhishek Sharma.

Digvesh’s fielding pranks had crossed the IPL Code of Conduct, inviting stern disciplinary action. Now, Akash Singh’s gesture has ignited new debates over the league’s enforcement of celebratory behavior. Though he came back with decent returns of 1/29 in 3.1 overs, everyone was watching out for his post-wicket behavior.

The official social media handles of the IPL soon jumped on the moment, alluding to the fact that the event has not escaped notice. Whether the league or the BCCI will come down with a formal warning or disciplinary action is only known later, but one thing is certain the tick-the-notebook celebration still exists, despite the crackdown.
