An Year Old Prediction By England Legend Kevin Pietersen Turns Out True For Shubman Gill

Former English cricketer Kevin Pietersen’s tweet from a year ago that requested everyone to provide Shubman Gill with some time to sparkle in Tests has gone viral once again on social media, following the latter’s resounding double hundred against England on Wednesday at Edgbaston. Gill’s classy maiden double century took India to an intimidating 564/7 at tea on the second day of the second Test vs. England in Edgbaston.

“Kallis averaged 22 in his first 10 Tests and turned out to be arguably the greatest player to play the game. Give @ShubmanGill time to find it, please. He is a serious player.” Pietersen posted in February 2024

Pietersen’s tweet is from the second Test of England’s tour of India, where Gill got out for 34 in the first innings to James Anderson. He had scored 23 and 0 in the first Test and thus got a lot of flak. At the end of the five-match series, Gill was the second-leading run-scorer after Yashasvi Jaiswal, with 452 runs in five matches at an incredible average of 56.5.

Gill, on Thursday, also became the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double hundred in a Test in England. Gill registered the highest Indian score by a batsman on English soil too, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 at the Oval in 1979. India had scored 109 runs during the day’s first session with Gill and Ravindra Jadeja (89), two overnight batsmen, taming 203 runs for the sixth wicket before the latter fell victim to Josh Tongue. Aside from the figures, what is brilliant about Gill’s accomplishment is that the big-ticket series is his maiden one as Test captain.
