After a disastrous IPL 2025 campaign that saw them finish at the bottom of the points table with just four wins from 14 matches, 5-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) find themselves at a crossroads. The team shifted focus mid-season, opting to give opportunities to younger players, clearly signaling an eye on the future.
As the franchise gears up for IPL 2026, it’s evident that major changes are on the horizon. With the mini-auction scheduled later this year, CSK may look to part ways with several players including a few big names to rebuild a more balanced and competitive unit.
Here’s a look at seven players CSK could release before the next season:
Ravichandran Ashwin
The biggest name under the scanner is veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Bought for a hefty Rs 9.75 crore, expectations were sky-high. But Ashwin struggled throughout the season, managing just 7 wickets in 9 games at an economy of 9.12 – his worst in IPL history. He was eventually dropped mid-season, reflecting the management’s dwindling faith. Releasing Ashwin would not only free up a large chunk of the budget but also open the door for younger, more dynamic options in the spin department.
Devon Conway
After his incredible 600-plus run season in IPL 2023, Devon Conway missed 2024 due to injury. CSK showed faith by bringing him back for Rs 6.25 crore in 2025, but the left-hander couldn’t repay that trust. In six games, he scored only 156 runs, struggling with timing and fluency. With CSK looking to refresh their top order, Conway’s release seems increasingly likely.
Rahul Tripathi
Once a reliable top-order enforcer, Rahul Tripathi had a forgettable IPL 2025. Brought in to provide quick starts, he managed only 55 runs from five games at a dismal average of 11 and a strike rate of 96.49 – his worst in the league. With CSK already testing young talents like Urvil Patel and Ayush Mhatre, it’s unlikely Tripathi will be retained heading into the 2026 season.
Deepak Hooda
A calculated gamble that didn’t pay off, Deepak Hooda was expected to add depth to the middle order but struggled badly. He managed a mere 31 runs in five outings, averaging just 6.20. With little contribution and no momentum shown, CSK will likely move on from him in their squad overhaul.
Vijay Shankar
After a decade-long absence from the CSK setup, Vijay Shankar returned in 2025 hoping to strengthen the middle order. While he did score 118 runs in six matches at a respectable average of 39.33, his performances lacked real match-winning impact. At 34, with limited utility in tight games, CSK may prefer to invest in a younger all-rounder moving forward.
Rachin Ravindra
Despite his all-round potential, Rachin Ravindra didn’t quite fit into CSK’s plans. In eight matches, he scored 191 runs at an average of 27.28, but his strike rate of 128.18 was underwhelming for a top-order T20 batter. With overseas slots at a premium, CSK might let him go to make room for more explosive foreign talent.
Sam Curran
Returning to CSK for Rs 2.40 crore, Sam Curran failed to recreate his earlier magic with the franchise. In five games, he managed 114 runs and picked up just one wicket, never truly influencing games the way CSK would’ve hoped. With his all-round returns fading and several alternatives available, the team may opt to release him before the 2026 auction.
What’s Next for CSK?
CSK’s legacy is built on consistency and smart squad management. However, the poor performance in IPL 2025 has made it clear that some tough calls are needed. With a mini-auction ahead, expect the franchise to reshape its roster possibly around young blood and a new core to bring back the winning spirit in IPL 2026.
